Nutrition
Nutrition is an important component of bariatric surgery. There are several life-long diet and lifestyle changes a person must make to enjoy all of the success a weight loss procedure can bring. Each patient is required to meet with a registered dietician at least once prior to surgery and then as needed post-operatively.
Our program’s registered dieticians specialize in bariatric nutrition. They are dedicated to helping you succeed with your weight loss goals and to guiding you to a lifestyle of healthy eating. Before your surgery, a dietician will meet with you individually to answer any questions you may have. You will be given pre– and post-operative dietary instructions, including the post-op dietary progression, protein and fluid requirements and the lifelong vitamin and mineral supplementation that are required. After your surgery, the dietitian will consult with you approximately every three months throughout the first year to address any post-surgery eating issues you may be facing, reinforce good eating and activity behaviors and to check that you are getting adequate nutrients.
Having a good understanding of proper nutrition is critical for the success of bariatric surgery. You may hear of other patients that follow different dietary guidelines, but remember that every surgeon does not perform the same weight loss surgery and that dietary guidelines may differ. Consult your dietician regularly to learn all you need to make the most of your weight loss surgery.
