Health Tip for 7/29/2010 - Better Breathing

They say it makes you feel happier, more rested, and that it’s the new miracle cure for a hangover, but are oxygen bars healthy or just hype? Northwest Hospital pulmonologist Dr. Helena Jones says while the trendy specialty bars may be an interesting social outing, taking a few whiffs of oxygen really won’t do much for you.

"Any given breath of air you take only last a few seconds at most, so a shot of oxygen at an oxygen bar and most likely has no long-term health benefits," Dr. Jones says. "It won’t harm you, but people with asthma or severe emphysema should avoid it all together and only use oxygen as prescribed by their physicians.”

If you’re hooked on the oxygen juice already, try not to overdo it, because high-levels of O 2 for a sustained period of time can actually be harmful to the lungs.
